Plot summary
Katey Miller is a high school senior bound for Radcliffe when her father's job with Ford sends the family to Havana in November 1958. She had wanted to finish school at home. James Phelps, whose father is Bert's employer, is attracted to her, and the other American teenagers at the Hotel Oceana live by a different mentality. Watching the street dancing of the locals, Katey is drawn to Javier Súarez, a hotel waiter who dances in the city's nightclubs; a romance between them would be forbidden by their social class differences. Katey proposes that she and Javier enter a Cuban dance contest at the Palace Hotel, combining the ballroom steps her former-competitor parents taught her with his street style. Their stay is set against the Castro-led revolution against the Batista government.

- The story was rooted in real life: screenwriter Peter Sagal based it on producer JoAnn Jansen's own teenage years, since Jansen actually lived in Cuba as a 15-year-old in 1958-59, around the time of the revolution.
- Natalie Portman was offered the lead role of Katey Miller and turned it down, and Ricky Martin was in consideration to play Javier Suarez before Diego Luna was cast.
- Star Romola Garai has said the shoot was such a negative experience it made her reconsider working in Hollywood at all, recalling that the filmmakers told her they wanted an actress who was extremely thin and questioning why they hadn't just hired someone like Kate Bosworth instead.
- During the 2017 Harvey Weinstein scandal, Romola Garai revealed that Weinstein, whose company Miramax was co-producing the film, made the then-18-year-old actress come alone to his hotel room at the Savoy to secure the role, where he answered the door wearing only a bathrobe.
