Plot summary
Beyond Texas lies a desert the government has declared outside American law, where people it labels the bad batch are left to fend for themselves. A sign marks the territory as outside the United States, where citizenship and American law no longer apply. Arlen is exiled there, and two women in a golf cart kidnap her. She wakes chained in their camp, and one of the women severs her right arm and leg. Arlen tricks her captor into releasing the chain, flees on a skateboard, and a mute hermit finds her in the desert and takes her to Comfort, a settlement of all-night raves run by a leader called The Dream.
