Plot summary
In 1983 Argentina, Valentín Arregui, a political prisoner involved with a revolutionary group, is placed in a cell with Luis Molina, a trans woman window dresser convicted of public indecency. Valentín is initially irritated by Molina, but he lets her recount a Hollywood musical she loves, Kiss of the Spider Woman, which stars Ingrid Luna. The two gradually form a connection.

- Bill Condon called Jennifer Lopez and Diego Luna his "first and only" choices for their roles, while Tonatiuh was picked from hundreds of actors who auditioned.
- Jennifer Lopez said she lost weight for the role of Aurora and described the shoot as "equal parts exhilarating and exhausting", and her "elaborate" musical numbers were each filmed in a single take.
- Condon took inspiration from Bob Fosse's 1972 Cabaret and cut almost every song set in the prison reality, keeping only the fantasy numbers; as a result the film's aspect ratio shifts between the prison scenes and the fantasy sequences.
- Three songs written for the film by Kander with additional lyrics by Ebb, "I Will Dance Alone", "Never You" and "An Everyday Man", had actually been used in the original, very different 1990 premiere production of the musical in Purchase, New York.
