Biography

Paul Douglas was an American actor who came to prominence on stage and screen after years in newsreels. Born in Philadelphia, he attended Yale College and acted in student productions, then logged two decades in 20th Century-Fox's newsreel operation, narrating films and writing captions. In 1936 he debuted on Broadway in Double Dummy, and a decade later his performance as Harry Brock in Born Yesterday brought him a Theatre World Award and a Clarence Derwent Award. He became known for the baseball comedies It Happens Every Spring (1949) and Angels in the Outfield (1951). Among his other films were A Letter to Three Wives (1949), Panic in the Streets (1950), The Big Lift (1950), Clash by Night (1952), and Executive Suite (1954). He hosted the 1950 Academy Awards and worked in radio as an announcer for The Ed Wynn Show.

A change of course
Before he turned to acting, Douglas put in 20 years at the 20th Century-Fox newsreel department, where he worked as a narrator and wrote captions.
First role
Douglas made his Broadway debut in 1936. He played the radio announcer in Double Dummy, written by Doty Hobart and Tom McKnight, at the John Golden Theatre.
A first
In March 1950, Douglas hosted the 22nd annual Academy Awards. He was the master of ceremonies for that year's event.
