Leonid Kinskey

Biography

Leonid Kinskey was a film and television actor who began as a mime in imperial theaters in his native St. Petersburg during the mid-1910s. He left Russia for Germany in 1921, performed on stages in Europe and South America, and arrived in New York City in 1924. After joining the road company of Al Jolson's musical Wonder Bar, he reached the screen in Trouble in Paradise (1932). His accent and looks helped him land supporting roles, including the Sylvanian agitator in Duck Soup (1933). His best-known role was Sascha in Casablanca (1942). From the 1950s to the early 1970s he appeared in some three dozen television shows, among them The Real McCoys in 1962 and the pilot of Hogan's Heroes in 1965, with final TV roles in 1971. He also wrote and directed industrial films and translated stories about Russian life.

A role that slipped away
In 1965, Kinskey played a Soviet soldier held as a prisoner-of-war in the pilot episode of Hogan's Heroes, but he chose not to become part of the cast.
Languages
In 1962, Kinskey appeared on the sitcom The Real McCoys, playing a Soviet dignitary who visited in the episode "The Good Will Tour" and spoke mostly Russian.
A change of course
Kinskey's acting career got little of his time after the mid-1950s. He owned Bublitschki, a Sunset Strip restaurant, and also wrote and directed industrial films and translated and wrote stories about Russian life.
