Alice Brady
Biography
Alice Brady was an American actress of the stage and screen who started in the theater in 1911 and had her first major success on Broadway in 1912, creating the role of Meg March in Little Women. She entered silent films with As Ye Sow in 1914 and made many features over the following decade while continuing to act onstage. After focusing on theater from 1923, she returned to film in 1933 in When Ladies Meet, her first talking picture, and worked steadily thereafter. She earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress for My Man Godfrey (1936) and won the same award for In Old Chicago (1938). Her last film was Young Mr. Lincoln (1939). In 1960 she received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Brady's first big career success arrived in 1912, when she originated Meg March in Marian de Forest's Little Women. The play, based on Louisa May Alcott's novel, had its original Broadway and national touring productions.
Behind the award
A long-enduring myth says Brady was absent from the Academy Awards presentation dinner, and that a man accepted her Oscar plaque onstage for her. According to the myth, the plaque was never found and the impostor was never caught.

Brady stopped making films in 1923 to focus on stage acting and did not return to the screen until 1933, when When Ladies Meet became her first talking picture.
