Biography

Binnie Barnes was an English actress whose screen career lasted from 1923 to 1973. She was born in Islington, London, and held jobs including chorus girl, nurse and dance hostess before turning to acting. Her first film work came in 1923, in a short made by Lee De Forest using his Phonofilm process, and she went on to become a leading lady. She disliked taking submissive parts. In Britain she played Katherine Howard in The Private Life of Henry VIII (1933), and among her later films were The Last of the Mohicans (1936) and In Old California (1942). A period in Europe brought appearances in Decameron Nights and Malaga. She continued working in Hollywood, and in 1960 she was given a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for her film work. Her final role was in the comedy 40 Carats (1973).
