Ben Welden
Biography
Ben Welden was an American character actor who usually played Damon Runyon-style gangsters in films and on television. Born in Toledo, Ohio, he broke into movies with the British production The Man from Chicago (1930), worked as a freelance for several years and joined Warner Bros. in 1937. Short and balding, he was often cast as a heavy, frequently in a comic or slightly dim-witted manner, such as the goon in The Big Sleep (1946) and a wisecracking saloon keeper in The Roaring Twenties (1939). Television viewers knew him from eight episodes of Adventures of Superman, each time as a different character, from two 1966 episodes of Batman, and from six episodes of The Lone Ranger. He also had a supporting part in the Three Stooges short Three Dark Horses (1952) and carried on working in television until 1966.
