Plot summary
In the British province of New York, the French and Indian War has placed Colonel Munro in command of a wilderness fort. His daughters Alice and Cora leave Albany to join him, escorted by Major Duncan Heyward and the Huron scout Magua. Magua secretly plans harm to the colonel and his daughters and leads the travelers into an ambush. Natty Bumppo, a frontiersman whose marksmanship earns him the name Hawkeye, comes to their aid with Chingachgook and Uncas, the last of the Mohicans, and the group continues toward the fort. Along the way Uncas and Cora grow close, as do Hawkeye and Alice. General Montcalm and his Indian allies then besiege the fort.

- Screenwriter Philip Dunne said production was postponed by casting problems, and that while he was away other writers turned his and John L. Balderston's authentic 18th-century period piece into a third-rate Western.
- Producer Edward Small then hired Philip Dunne to rewrite the dialogue on set, although Dunne says the structure of his original script remained altered.
- Merle Oberon was originally announced as the female lead of the film, made by producer Edward Small's Reliance Picture Corporation for United Artists.
