Plot summary
Opera season is under way in New York, and Leonard Borland, a building contractor with a working-class upbringing, has a wife, Doris, whose family is socially prominent, and whose ambition is to sing. Leonard does not believe she has the talent, and Doris trains with the voice teacher Hugo. She gives a recital, which Leonard supports in the hope that it settles the matter for her. The opera singer Cecil Carver is in the audience, takes an interest in Leonard, and concludes that Doris will never make a professional career of singing. Cecil offers to train Leonard instead, and he agrees, a step she thinks will raise him to Doris's social standing.

- Myrna Loy was originally cast in the role that eventually went to Loretta Young in Wife, Husband and Friend. Lionel Atwill was considered for the part of Hertz, Ed Brophy for Jaffe and Eily Malyon for Mrs. Craig.
- Wife, Husband and Friend was among the last films Loretta Young made under contract at 20th Century-Fox. She then declined to sign with Fox or any other studio, not wanting to be at the mercy of studio bosses, and went on to win an Academy Award for The Farmer's Daughter (1947).
- Three voice doubles stood in for the stars of Wife, Husband and Friend: Emery D'Arcy for Warner Baxter, Nina Koshetz for Binnie Barnes and Tamara Shavrova for Loretta Young, and none of them got screen credit.
