Plot summary
In Tombstone, Arizona, a saloon owner named Carter plots to have Indian Charlie drink and then fire on a competing saloon. The sheriff will not intervene, so a newcomer, Wyatt Earp, puts an end to the chaos. For acting on his own, Earp is set upon by men Carter employs. The beating leads Earp to accept the post of marshal.

- Wyatt Earp's widow Josephine Earp sued 20th Century Fox for $50,000 to block the remake, and Fox settled with her for $5,000 after agreeing to remove her husband's name from the title; she had already forced the same change on the 1934 film.
- Cesar Romero played Doc Halliday rather than Doc Holliday: the name was respelled for the film because the makers feared a lawsuit from Holliday's family.
- John Ford remade Frontier Marshal in 1946 as My Darling Clementine, reusing whole scenes reshot from the 1939 film.
