Plot summary
Dancer Jean Thatcher is hurt in a car accident. Her father, Judge Thatcher, and her fiancé, Dr. Jerry Holden, ask the neurosurgeon Dr. Richard Vollin to come out of retirement and operate on the nerve roots in her skull. Vollin does research and is unmoved by suffering, so he refuses. The judge tells him his former hospital colleagues believe only he can succeed, and his vanity changes his mind. A month later Jean has recovered, and Vollin is obsessed with her. Edmond Bateman, a bank robber on the run after killing two guards, asks Vollin for a new face.

- On its initial release The Raven was banned in several territories, including China, the Netherlands, and Ontario and British Columbia in Canada; in Britain, The Times published a report on horror films and The Raven on August 4, 1935.
- The Associated Press reported that The Raven would be the last horror film passed by the British Board of Film Censors.
- Four days before production began, Landers, Universal studio executives and the Production Code Administration met and confirmed that no scenes of the operation would be shown, and the PCA warned the studio it was running the risk of excessive horror.
- Between August 1934 and March 1935 at least seven writers worked on The Raven's script; novelist Guy Endore's 19-page treatment, which drew on Poe's poem and "The Gold-Bug", went unused, and Universal announced Chester Morris for a role he did not appear in.
