Plot summary
Armand Duval studies law in Paris. He sees Marguerite Gautier, a courtesan, at the opera and is smitten. Suitors surround her at her lavish apartment. Armand follows her to one of her private parties, where she refuses him at first. She has consumption, and bouts of illness come over her often, though she keeps her condition secret. She then answers his affection.
