Biography

Rudolph Valentino, born in Castellaneta, Italy, became one of the iconic stars of American silent cinema as an actor and dancer. After moving to the United States, he first worked as a taxi dancer and then as an exhibition ballroom dancer. His breakthrough came with The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse (1921), a major commercial and critical success. Dubbed the Latin Lover, he later starred in The Sheik (1921), The Eagle (1925), Beyond the Rocks (1922), and The Son of the Sheik (1926). His exotic, romantic screen image made him an early screen sex symbol and helped change ideas about male stardom. In 1925 he established the Rudolph Valentino Medal, a precursor to the Academy Award. He died in 1926.

Behind the award
Valentino handed out just one medal in his career, in 1925, to actor John Barrymore for his work in the 1924 film Beau Brummel. He was among the earliest people in Hollywood to give an award for artistic achievement in films, a path the Academy Awards would follow.

Valentino wanted authenticity and to shoot on location, so in 1925 he started Rudolph Valentino Productions. The incorporators were Valentino, S. George Ullman, and Beatrice Ullman.
