Biography

John Halliday was an American performer known for polished aristocratic and foreign roles on stage and screen. Born in Brooklyn, he spent his youth in Europe. After military service in the Boer War and a brief, unsuccessful turn in gold mining and finance, he joined a stock theater company led by Nat Goodwin, then toured as a leading man with T. Daniel Frawley. He made his Broadway debut in 1912 in The Whip and became a familiar figure in refined comedies, including The Circle, Sour Grapes, Jealousy, and Rain from Heaven. In films, Halliday was among the leads of Millie (1931). His most celebrated screen role was Seth Lord, the father of Katharine Hepburn's Tracy Lord, in the adaptation of Philip Barry's The Philadelphia Story (1940). He gave his final performance in Lydia (1941).
