Plot summary
On the crossing, a fan's polite question draws from ballet creator Charles Coudray the memory of Paula Woodward, a ballerina who auditions for him and collapses; a doctor tells her Aunt Lydia that her heart cannot survive more dancing. In Rome, Mademoiselle, a governess and French tutor, is left in charge of eleven-year-old Thomas Clayton Campbell Jr. at a hotel while his parents are away, and a neighbor reputed to be a witch gives the boy a ribbon and a spell that makes him a young man until midnight. In Paris, Pierre Narval pulls Nina Burkhardt from the Seine and asks her, since she does not fear dying, to be his trapeze partner.
