Plot summary
The Southern Engineering Company is draining a Louisiana swamp, and the crew has stopped work. The men believe the mummies of Kharis and his bride lie buried out there, and one of them has been found murdered. Pat Walsh, the project boss, dismisses the talk until Dr. James Halsey and Dr. Ilzor Zandaab arrive from the Scripps Museum with credentials to search for the missing mummies. Betty Walsh, Pat's niece and secretary, takes an interest in the story and in Halsey. A bulldozer uncovers one of the mummies, and a young woman is later found wandering the bayou, calling the name Kharis.
