At the seashore in China, Lotus Flower sees a man floating unconscious in the water and quickly gets help for him. He is Allen Carver, an American visiting the country. The two fall in love and marry in the Chinese fashion, and Carver promises to take his wife with him when he returns to the United States. Chinese gossips warn Lotus Flower that he will leave her behind, and one of them says that four American husbands have already forgotten her, but she does not believe them. Carver's friends discourage him from keeping that promise, and he goes back alone.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about The Toll of the Sea (1922)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Once believed lost, The Toll of the Sea was restored in 1985 by the UCLA Film and Television Archive from the 35mm nitrate original camera negative, under the supervision of Robert Gitt and Peter Comandini. With the final two reels missing, Gitt and Comandini shot a new sunset on a California beach with an original two-color Technicolor camera.
- The Toll of the Sea was the second Technicolor feature, following 1917's The Gulf Between, and the first Technicolor color feature anywhere that did not require a special projector to be used for screenings.
- Because the Technicolor camera split the lens image into two beams to expose two film frames at once through color filters, and at twice the normal frames per second, much higher lighting levels were required. All scenes were shot outdoors in natural light, with the single interior scene filmed in sunlight under a muslin sheet.
