Plot summary
In 1945, the U.S.S. Reluctant lies at anchor beside a tropical island, a cargo ship far from the fighting and months at sea. Captain Morton runs the crew hard in hopes of winning a command of his own, granting no leave and no favors, and the sailors seethe toward mutiny without daring to move first. Ensign Frank Pulver, all talk and no action, feels unappreciated by shipmates Billings, Insigna, Skouras and Dolan; only Doc believes he might amount to something. The captain denies seaman Bruno leave for his daughter's funeral. When someone drives a sharp object into the captain's hindquarters, a crew poll for the culprit names nearly everyone but Pulver, and he resents it. Then a company of nurses arrives on a nearby atoll.
