Plot summary
Stephen Brooks, a British lance corporal, is held at Stalag 7A and sent with other prisoners to work at the Munich zoo. He is given the job of looking after Lucy, a female Asian elephant, and the zoo's elephant keeper shows him what the work involves. Brooks resents the chore at first, then grows attached to the animal. After an American bombing raid, the zoo director decides Lucy is no longer safe in Munich, and she is to be moved to Innsbruck Zoo by train. Brooks, the friendly soldier Willy, the hostile soldier Kurt and Vronia, a cook, are to escort her. On the day they leave, SS Colonel von Haller takes the train for his troops and suggests Brooks can walk the elephant to Austria instead.

- Hannibal Brooks was inspired by a real diary kept by Tom Wright, who was captured as a prisoner of war and spent nine months tending Asian elephants at the Munich Zoo; the elephant's dramatic escape to Switzerland shown in the film is entirely fictional.
- Director Michael Winner made Hannibal Brooks only because he could not raise financing for a planned film about William the Conqueror; once that project collapsed, he turned to this script instead.
