Plot summary
The war in Europe is over, and the American hospital unit in France is close to being sent home for discharge. Private Hogan, an enlisted schemer, catches his first sight of a newly arrived nurse, Lieutenant Betty Bixby, and decides he wants her at his side. Standing night guard, he sets aside his rifle to pick up her dropped cigarette lighter, and security officer Captain Paul Lock confines him to his quarters pending a court martial. Colonel Rousch, who runs the hospital, would rather settle the matter inside the unit than damage morale. Hogan's answer is a ball at an off-limits hotel for the nurses and the enlisted men, forbidden by regulations, with Lock watching for the first misstep.
