Alfred Lynch

Alfred Lynch was an English actor whose work spanned stage, film and television. Born in Whitechapel, London, in 1931, he attended theater acting evening classes while working in a factory. In 1958 he joined the Royal Court Theatre, appearing in original productions of Arnold Wesker's Chicken Soup with Barley and The Kitchen. He also starred in Joan Littlewood's staging of Brendan Behan's The Hostage in London and New York, and critic Kenneth Tynan praised his playing. From 1960 he moved increasingly into film and television. His film work included leads in On the Fiddle (1961) and West 11 (1962), parts in The Password Is Courage (1962) and The Hill (1965), Tranio in The Taming of the Shrew (1967), and Charlie Kray in The Krays (1990). On television he played Hereward the Wake's title role (1965) and the lead in Manhunt (1969), later appearing in Bergerac, Lovejoy and Doctor Who. He died in 2003.
