Cyril Smith
Biography
Cyril Smith was a Scottish actor who started as a child on the stage in 1900 and worked in theater and film until his death in 1963. Born in Peterhead, he traveled to New York in 1905 to play Cosmo in J. M. Barrie's Alice-Sit-By-The Fire opposite Ethel Barrymore, and The New York Times called him one of England's best-known child actors. His first film was Wilfred Noy's Old St. Paul's in 1914, and he appeared in almost twenty more silent movies. From the early 1930s he was in dozens of features, from quota quickies and B movies to larger productions with Vivien Leigh, Trevor Howard and Deborah Kerr, often in uncredited bits or minor parts. Late in life he earned more prominent billings as scatty, doddery old men, including leading roles in Sailor Beware! and She Knows Y'Know. On television he played Merlin in The Adventures of Sir Lancelot and Harold Wormold in Hugh and I.
