Plot summary
Argyle Starshine fills his daughter Sunny Starscout's head with tales of an old Equestria where earth ponies, pegasi and unicorns lived together. The other earth ponies of Maretime Bay treat those stories as myths and go about their days afraid of the other kinds. Grown up, Sunny keeps arguing that the three races could be friends, and her campaign interrupts a showcase of unicorn- and pegasus-repelling gadgets staged by the factory owner Phyllis Cloverleaf. Hitch Trailblazer, the town sheriff and Sunny's childhood friend, warns her that she is putting their friendship at risk. Then a unicorn, Izzy Moonbow, walks into Maretime Bay, and Sunny hides her from the town. From Izzy she learns that unicorns have lost their magic, and the two set out for the pegasus city of Zephyr Heights to ask for help.

- Tara Strong said in April 2020 that she would not return as Twilight Sparkle in the franchise's fifth incarnation because she was already voicing the character in My Little Pony: Pony Life, but ultimately reprised the role for the film's prologue alongside Andrea Libman, Ashleigh Ball and Tabitha St. Germain.
- Unlike earlier My Little Pony media, which used 2D computer animation, My Little Pony: A New Generation was animated entirely in 3D; only the brief opening flashback, featuring the "Mane Six" of Friendship Is Magic, was done in traditional 2D.
- Part of the film's voice recording was done remotely because of the COVID-19 pandemic, and Liza Koshy said the experience tied into the film's message about "not leaning into the fear"; Kimiko Glenn encouraged Koshy to ad-lib lines during recording.
