Biography

Steve Whitmire is an American puppeteer known for his work with the Jim Henson Company, Sesame Workshop, and the Muppets Studio. Born in Atlanta, he began performing with his puppet Otis at a Six Flags Over Georgia pre-show and on Atlanta television before joining The Muppet Show in 1978. He went on to perform in nearly every major Henson project, including the films The Dark Crystal (1982) and Labyrinth (1986) and the series Dinosaurs. Whitmire created such Muppet characters as Rizzo the Rat, Lips, Bean Bunny, and Wembley Fraggle, with Bean Bunny debuting in the special The Tale of the Bunny Picnic (1986). He was the second performer of Kermit the Frog and Ernie, playing them until 2016 and 2014, and also took over Statler and Beaker. In addition, he performed Link Hogthrob in The Muppets (2011) and Muppets Most Wanted (2014).
