Tony Bennett
Biography
Tony Bennett, an American singer of jazz and traditional pop, enjoyed a long career that began in the 1950s and continued into the twenty-first century. Born in Queens, he studied bel canto at the American Theatre Wing and signed with Columbia Records in 1950. Because of You reached number one in 1951, followed by hits such as Rags to Riches; in 1962 he recorded I Left My Heart in San Francisco, which won two Grammy Awards and became his signature song. His success declined during the rock era, but he rebuilt his audience from the late 1980s with late-night television and MTV appearances, and the album MTV Unplugged won Album of the Year. He later collaborated with Lady Gaga on Cheek to Cheek and Love for Sale, and appeared as himself in Bruce Almighty (2003) and the special Tony Bennett: An American Classic (2006), which earned multiple Emmys.

A first
Bennett became the first male pop vocalist to perform with Count Basie's band. Their collaboration yielded the albums Strike Up the Band and In Person!, both from 1959.

Bennett staged a concert at Carnegie Hall in June 1962 with the Ralph Sharon Trio and other musicians. No male pop performer had played there before, only Judy Garland a year earlier, and the show had 44 songs.

Bennett set a Guinness World Record as the oldest artist to put out an album of new material, doing so at 95 years and 60 days. Marshall Allen later passed him at age 100.
