Plot summary
During a France-China football match, French coach Yves Gluant turns up wearing a ring set with the Pink Panther diamond and greets his girlfriend, the pop star Xania. France wins, and Gluant is killed by a poison dart; the diamond is gone. Chief Inspector Charles Dreyfus, who wants the Légion d'honneur, promotes the clumsy Jacques Clouseau to inspector and puts him on the case, while a secret team does the real work and Gendarme Gilbert Ponton is told to report on his colleague's every move. Clouseau befriends Ponton and falls for Nicole Durant, a secretary. Many people around the team held grudges against Gluant, among them the player Bizu, who blamed him for taking Xania away.

- The film was originally supposed to seek an August 5, 2005 release date under MGM, but was pushed back to February 10, 2006 after Sony expressed dissatisfaction with its raunchy tone; it was heavily edited and key scenes were re-shot to create a more family-friendly feature.
- At the 2006 Stinkers Bad Movie Awards the film received four nominations: "Worst Actor" for Martin, "Worst Song" for "Check on It", and "Worst Fake Accent (Male)" for both Martin and Kline.
- Jason Statham plays Yves Gluant, the head coach of the France national football team, whose murder and the vanishing of his Pink Panther diamond serve as the main conflicts of the plot, and the performance is uncredited.

- Before the part was settled, Chris Tucker and Mike Myers were both considered for the role of Inspector Jacques Clouseau in this remake.
