Plot summary
Richard Conway, a peace negotiator for the United Nations, is one of several travelers aboard a DC3 that is hijacked as it leaves a country in the grip of revolution. The plane comes down in a part of the Himalayas that has not been explored, and the survivors are found and led to the lamasery of Shangri-La. Ringed by mountains, the valley stays mild while snow covers the land around it, and its people are healthy and look young even in advanced age. Conway grows close to Catherine, a schoolteacher who lost her parents on a hike with her. Sally Hughes, a photographer, begins counseling with the lama Chang, and the industrialist Sam Cornelius finds gold in a river. Only Conway's brother George wants to go.

- Lost Horizon flopped in the United States but became the highest-grossing film in Japan in both 1973 and 1974, taking in more than twice the year's second-highest film, The Human Revolution, and surpassing The Godfather until The Exorcist overtook it in December 1974.
- The film was chosen for a Command Film Performance before Queen Elizabeth, the first American film in seventeen years to receive that honor.
- Larry Kramer was not proud of his workmanlike adaptation, but the deal he engineered after his Oscar nomination for Women in Love, plus investments, freed him financially to spend the rest of his life on gay activism and plays such as The Normal Heart.
- Julie Andrews was considered for the role of Catherine, and producer Ross Hunter also had a part written for Helen Hayes.
- The soundtrack fared better than the film: "Living Together, Growing Together" by The 5th Dimension became the band's last top 40 pop hit, and Diana Ross and Marvin Gaye covered "Things I Will Not Miss" during sessions for their 1973 album Diana and Marvin.
