Plot summary
MSgt Mike Takashima, Lt. Col. Glenn Stevenson and 2nd Lt. John Gregg belong to the U.S. Air Force Air Rescue Service at Ashiya Air Base in Japan. A Japanese ship has gone down in a storm, and survivors wait on a life raft. Two Grumman HU-16 Albatross seaplanes set out for them. As they fly, each man recalls his past. Gregg's helicopter once flew too near a mountain in Europe and set off an avalanche that buried the group he was trying to reach, and he has feared flying solo since. Stevenson met and married Caroline Gordon while he was flying as a civilian in the Philippines before World War II, and he carries a deep prejudice against the Japanese. Takashima, whose mother was Polish and father Japanese, was an Army paratrooper in love with Leila, an Algerian girl.
