Biography

Christian Marquand was a French actor who made his screen debut in 1946 in Jean Cocteau's Beauty and the Beast. Born in Marseille in 1927, he went on to bigger parts in Christian-Jaque's Lucrèce Borgia (1953) and Luchino Visconti's Senso (1954). Roger Vadim directed him opposite Brigitte Bardot in And God Created Woman (1956), and that film's success brought starring roles in No Sun in Venice (1957), Temptation (1959) and The Big Show (1960), along with leads opposite Maria Schell, Jean Seberg and Annie Girardot. His turn as Philippe Kieffer in The Longest Day in 1962 opened the way to international productions including Behold a Pale Horse (1964), Lord Jim (1965) and The Flight of the Phoenix (1965). He kept working in film and television into the 1970s and played a plantation owner in Apocalypse Now Redux. He also directed Les Grands Chemins (1963) and Candy (1968).
