Plot summary

In the summer of 1917, with their father away fighting in World War I, the Butterworth children are evacuated from London to the mansion of their uncle, Albert. Robert, Cyril, Anthea, Jane and the toddler called the Lamb explore the house. Robert discovers a locked door inside the forbidden greenhouse, and beyond it a path leads down to the beach, where the children meet a shelled creature that calls itself a psammead, known to them as It.
