Plot summary
Their mother's death brings twins Rachel and Theo to Auckland, to the home of their Aunt Kay and Uncle Cliff beside a volcanic lake. A smell drifts across the water from the old Wilberforce house, and the twins sense that they are being watched. On Mt Eden, Theo notices an old man, Mr. Jones, whose hands seem to give off fire. Convinced the Wilberforce house holds answers, the pair go inside and find a place that could not be of this world. There they hear Mr. Wilberforce speak of something waking below the ground, and of what he will do to them should they track down the fire-raiser. Rachel reaches for her brother, but Theo, unwilling to let anyone near since their mother died, goes off on his own.
