Plot summary
One Eye is a mute warrior who has spent years as a prisoner of the Norse chieftain Barde, forced to fight. The boy slave Are brings him his meals. After a dream about an arrowhead, One Eye finds one while bathing and uses it to break free, then sets out across the land with Are at his side. The two fall in with Christian Norsemen who are persecuting the heathen Scots, and agree to sail with them toward the Holy Land on a crusade. Fog swallows the ship, and the expedition loses its way in the North Atlantic. Many days on, with supplies low, the crew sights land.
