Plot summary
In a world of marionettes, every person hangs from a string reaching endlessly into the sky, and nobody knows who holds the other end. A string that is cut cannot be rejoined, so a damaged marionette must be given a healthy part taken from someone else, and prisoners are kept for that purpose. Hal Tara is prince of Hebalon, son of the Kahro, who has spent years at war with the Zeriths. When the Kahro dies, Hal believes the Zeriths are responsible. He sets aside his rank, dresses as a commoner and leaves Hebalon to take his revenge. Among the Zeriths he meets Zita, a warrior woman.
