Carice van Houten
Biography
Carice van Houten is a Dutch actress who grew up on silent films. Her earliest lead came in Martin Koolhoven's TV film Suzy Q (1999), and the part earned her a Golden Calf in the television drama acting category. Two years later she collected another Golden Calf for her starring turn in Miss Minoes (2001). Black Book (2006) brought a second Golden Calf and nominations from the European Film Academy, the Chicago Film Critics Association, and the Online Film Critics Society; it was then the most commercially successful Dutch release. A Saturn Award nomination for supporting actress followed for Valkyrie (2008). She added Golden Calves for The Happy Housewife (2010), then another for Black Butterflies (2011). English-language credits include Repo Men (2010), Brimstone (2016), and Black Death (2010). International recognition came with her role as Melisandre on HBO's Game of Thrones, which earned a Primetime Emmy nomination and Screen Actors Guild ensemble nods.
