Plot summary
In 1913 Mexico, the American writer Ambrose Bierce wakes from a nightmare of being killed by Pancho Villa and sets out to join Villa's revolutionary army, talking about his plan with a bartender. He takes a stagecoach carrying John and Mary Newlie, newlyweds traveling into Mexico to preach Christianity. Elsewhere, the outlaw Johnny Madrid escapes the gallows and carries off Esmeralda, the nineteen-year-old daughter of the hangman Mauricio. Catherine Reece offers Madrid her help; she wants to become his apprentice. Mauricio rides after them with a posse while Madrid's gang gathers around him. When darkness falls, Madrid's people, the posse, Bierce's coach and the Newlies all seek shelter at the same remote inn.

- From Dusk Till Dawn 2 and 3 were produced simultaneously: Robert Rodríguez and his cousin Álvaro Rodríguez developed the prequel pitch, while Quentin Tarantino, Lawrence Bender, and Scott Spiegel produced the sequel pitch. Both films were shot back-to-back to share costs and filming resources, getting two movies for the price of one.
- Filming in Cape Town, South Africa, proved problematic for the Western scenes: with no horses in Africa trained to pull wagons, the wrangler trained 12 horses, and the only stagecoach available was a prop from a local Western-themed steakhouse that had to be heavily modified.
