Biography
Sônia Braga is a Brazilian actress who began in her teens with small roles on TV Tupi and made her stage debut at 17 in the play George Dandin. In 1968 she appeared in Brazil's first production of the musical Hair, and in 1972 the children's series Vila Sésamo made her a household name. She starred in the telenovela Gabriela in 1975 and in the film Dona Flor and Her Two Husbands (1976), which earned her a BAFTA nomination in 1981. Golden Globe nominations followed for Kiss of the Spider Woman (1985) and Moon over Parador (1988), and she received an Emmy nomination and a third Golden Globe nomination for the television film The Burning Season. Her other credits include The Milagro Beanfield War (1988), Angel Eyes (2001), Aquarius (2016), Bacurau (2019), and Fatima (2020). In 2020, The New York Times ranked her 24th among the greatest actors of the 21st century.

In 1987, Braga was the first Brazilian to present an Oscar category. Goldie Hawn introduced her as one of the world's most glamorous actresses, and she then appeared with Michael Douglas, who announced the best short film result.
A role that slipped away
In 1968, Braga joined the first Brazilian staging of the musical Hair. Director Ademar Guerra rejected her at first, but producer and actor Altair Lima insisted, and she came aboard.
Big break
Braga had already found success on stage and in soap operas, but it was the children's television series Vila Sésamo, shown in 1972, that made her a household name.
