Plot summary
Peter Maguire, a white lawyer, arrives by seaplane at a First Nations reserve in rural Canada. He acts for the band, whose land has been marked for logging, and his news is that the band has lost its court case and the company will begin building its road. A girl named Polly guides him past police striking protesters while trees are felled. Wilf Redwing, an elder and Maguire's contact, rejects the loss and calls the fight a long one. Maguire promises an appeal he expects to fail. Wilf takes him into a sweat lodge ceremony that fills his head with troubling images. Wilf then presents Arthur, a militant activist with a star-shaped pendant. Arthur draws Maguire into a plan to abduct Bud, the plant manager for the logging company, and the group sets off through the woods.
