Plot summary

Nicolas Marquez owns a ranch in a small village in Colombia, and his young son Martin is kept locked in a room there. Grace Burnham, a doctor from New York, arrives to treat the boy; Nicolas tells her to go home, but she stays. Martin says his mother Isabella died when she lost control of her horse while teaching him to ride. Father Gavira has convinced the villagers that the boy is the Antichrist, blaming him for a swarm of locusts at his birth and for the sickness now striking the animals. Nicolas refused the priest's request to perform an exorcism. Burnham believes Martin's condition can be explained medically and goes to the village to say so.
