Plot summary
Rejection, Nevada, lives on the income from a silver mine. In 1889, water from a hot spring causes eggs beneath the ground to hatch, and seventeen miners die. Most of the residents pack up and leave. The mine's owner, Hiram Gummer, a prissy Easterner, arrives to assess the situation and scoffs at the accounts of what happened at the mine. He runs a tab at Christine Lord's inn instead of paying in advance. Hiram goes out to the mine with Juan Pedilla, a surviving miner who dreams of paying off a ranch of his own, and the men who stayed in town. Something under the ground attacks their camp that night. Back in Rejection, Hiram has a telegram sent to newspapers advertising for a gunfighter, and Black Hand Kelly answers.
