Plot summary

In 1879, in the Dakota Territory, the Stewart family is attacked at their homestead. The next morning a few bodies and mysterious holes in the dirt are found, and the rest of the family, daughter Maryanne included, is gone. Henry Victor leads a military-backed search party that assumes hostile Native Americans took them. Frontiersman John Clay and his Irish assistant Fergus Coffey, who is engaged to Maryanne, ride along. So do William Parcher, who once served as a soldier, and Dobie Spacks, the teenage son of Parcher's girlfriend, and Walnut Callaghan, a former slave who cooks for Victor.
