Plot summary
Ren MacCormack arrives in Bomont, Georgia, from Boston to live with his uncle Wes Warnicker after his mother's death. Three years earlier, five teenagers died in a car crash on a bridge, including Bobby Moore, the son of Reverend Shaw Moore, and the town council banned loud music, partying and public dancing. At church, Ren notices Ariel, the reverend's daughter. At school he meets Willard Hewitt, who explains the bans. Ariel is secretly dating Chuck Cranston, a dirt-track driver.

- Kevin Bacon, who starred in the 1984 original, declined a cameo in the remake because he did not like the part offered, Ren McCormack's deadbeat father, though he gave director Craig Brewer his blessing.
- Zac Efron was cast as Ren McCormack in July 2007 but left the project in March 2009; Chace Crawford was to replace him, backed out over scheduling conflicts, and Kenny Wormald secured the lead on June 22, 2010.
- Amanda Bynes, Miley Cyrus and Hayden Panettiere were considered for the part of Ariel before Julianne Hough, a former Dancing with the Stars ballroom-dance professional, was cast.
- Kenny Loggins' "Footloose" was covered by Blake Shelton for the remake as an upbeat country version, while the film opens with several teens dancing to Loggins' original recording.
