Plot summary
In the summer of 1899, homeless and orphaned newsboys share a lodging house in Lower Manhattan, led informally by seventeen-year-old Jack Kelly, who dreams of leaving the city for the West. His best friend among them is Crutchie. Jack takes on two new sellers, Davey and Davey's nine-year-old brother Les, whose injured father cannot work and who have left school for now to help the family. Joseph Pulitzer, publisher of the New York World, watches his circulation decline and decides to raise the price the boys pay for their papers. When they learn the cost is sixty cents per hundred, Jack declares them a union and organizes a protest. Katherine Plumber, a young reporter, sees the strike as her chance to be taken seriously as a journalist.

- Staging Newsies on Broadway cost about $5 million, and the show recouped that investment in seven months, the fastest profit of any Disney musical on Broadway.
- Leading man Jeremy Jordan left the Broadway production on September 4, 2012 because of his commitments to NBC's Smash, and newcomer Corey Cott, his alternate earlier that month, replaced him from September 5.
- The musical's second-act rally echoes a real one: on July 24, 1899, the Newsboys Union packed the New Irving Theatre, a Bowery vaudeville venue reimagined as Medda Larkin's theater, and The New York Sun covered it in detail.
- Jack Kelly is a blend of several real leaders of the 1899 Newsboys' Strike, chiefly Kid Blink, a charismatic speaker who appears in the 1992 film but was omitted from the stage musical.

Unlike the 1992 film, the musical keeps the strike's real ending, with the World and the Journal agreeing to buy back unsold papers; history left the price at 60 cents per 100, while the show settles on 55.
