Emlyn Williams
Biography
Emlyn Williams was a Welsh actor, dramatist and writer. Born in Flintshire, he studied at Oxford and joined the Oxford University Dramatic Society before beginning his stage career with a London repertory company. His thriller Night Must Fall made him a star, and he played its psychopathic murderer. The Corn Is Green, his other major play, drew partly on his Welsh childhood, and he starred as the schoolboy in its London premiere. He wrote film screenplays, working with Alfred Hitchcock and Carol Reed, and acted in adaptations of A. J. Cronin novels including The Citadel, supplying dialogue for them. His screen roles included Hitchcock's Jamaica Inn and Pascal's Major Barbara. He also played Caligula in the unfinished I, Claudius and Wamba in Ivanhoe. Later he appeared in The Wreck of the Mary Deare and The L-Shaped Room. He directed The Last Days of Dolwyn, performed one-man shows as Charles Dickens, and was appointed a CBE in 1962.

At 22, Williams acted with OUDS in Full Moon, his first full-length play, staged at the original Oxford Playhouse in 1927.
Behind the camera
Williams wrote the autobiographical light comedy The Druid's Rest, which had its first performance at the St Martin's Theatre in London in 1944. At that show Richard Burton made his stage debut, after Williams noticed him at a Cardiff audition.

The only movie Williams directed was The Last Days of Dolwyn, released in 1949. He wrote it and acted in it too, and it gave Richard Burton his first screen role.
Beyond film
Williams often acted in his own plays and became famous for one-man shows that he took around the world, performing as Charles Dickens in an evening of passages from Dickens's novels. This one man show began a whole new theatrical genre.
