Edward Mulhare
Biography
Edward Mulhare was an Irish actor who worked for five decades. Born in Cork City, he started medical studies at the National University of Ireland before deciding on a theater career. He performed at the Gate Theatre in Dublin, then relocated to London, working alongside Orson Welles and John Gielgud, and appeared opposite Welles in a 1951 Othello that Welles directed and Laurence Olivier produced. He was best known on stage for playing Professor Higgins in the original Broadway staging of My Fair Lady, taking over from Rex Harrison in 1957 and playing it for three years in New York. On television he starred as Captain Daniel Gregg in The Ghost & Mrs. Muir from 1968 to 1970 and as Devon Miles in Knight Rider from 1982 to 1986. His films included Von Ryan's Express (1965), Our Man Flint (1966), Caprice (1967), Megaforce (1982) and Out to Sea (1997).

Mulhare's most famous stage part was Professor Higgins in the original Broadway run of My Fair Lady. He was Rex Harrison's understudy until 1957, when he took over the role, playing it in New York for three years and 1,000 performances.
