Plot summary
In 1859, Carl Heidigger and his old friend Alex meet to mark Carl's seventy-ninth birthday, and find Sylvia, the woman Carl was to marry thirty-eight years before, whole in her coffin. Carl believes the water dripping from the crypt ceiling kept her, and a withered rose blooms when he tries it. In Padua, a student named Giovanni sees Beatrice in the garden next door and falls in love; her father, Giacomo Rappaccini, has treated her with a plant extract that makes her touch deadly. Gerald Pyncheon brings his wife Alice back to the family house after seventeen years away. His sister Hannah tells Alice of the curse on Pyncheon men, and Jonathan Maulle, a descendant of the man who lost the house to the family, arrives as they argue over the inheritance.
