Plot summary
In Baybridge, the small Florida beach town near Tampa, Claire Brown and Hailey Rogers spend the last days of summer together. Hailey's mother works as a marine biologist, and the family is moving to Australia. Hailey prays for a miracle, and a violent storm arrives. The next morning Claire falls into the flooded local pool, and that night the girls sneak back and find a mermaid named Aquamarine, washed ashore by the storm. She fled home after her father promised her in marriage to a merman, and he will call it off if she proves within three days that true love exists. Her attention lands on Raymond, the lifeguard the girls have admired for years. Anyone who aids a mermaid is granted a wish, so they agree to help, hoping to stop Hailey's move.

- Chappell Roan cited Aquamarine as the inspiration for the music video for her 2022 single "Casual", telling Teen Vogue that the concept for the video was "Aquamarine but like, gay".
- Since its release Aquamarine has become a cult film, especially popular among Generation Z, and has been ranked one of the best "mermaid movies" by both USA Today and Teen Vogue.
- In June 2026 Disney ordered a sequel series pilot, with Roberts set to reprise her role as a guest star and to executive produce the new show.
- Two of the film's stars, Roberts and Paxton, were featured on the soundtrack, and in 2008 La La Land Records and Fox Music released a limited edition CD of 1000 pressings of David Hirschfelder's score, incorporating Paxton's voice.
