Plot summary
Calvin Cambridge lives in a Los Angeles orphanage with his friends Murph and Reg Stevens. At night the three sell chocolate at the STAPLES Center for the orphanage director, Stan Bittleman, after the home games of the Los Angeles Knights. Calvin's grasp of basketball impresses the team's coach, who gives him tickets. In a thrift store donation box Calvin comes across a cast-off pair of sneakers bearing the letters MJ. A bully named Ox takes them and tosses them onto a power line, and when Calvin tries to get them back during a rainstorm a lightning bolt hits him. The shock leaves him with extraordinary basketball ability, and at the next Knights game he is picked from the crowd for a halftime contest against the team's star, Tracy Reynolds.
