Plot summary
Before Halloween, Danny Walker and his father James move from Chicago to Walker Falls and stay with James's father, whom everyone calls Uncle Fred. James wants to reopen the family chocolate factory. Danny dislikes the town, where Coach Mike Kankel and his son Ryan make him feel unwelcome. Halloween is a week away, yet almost no decorations are up, and Sheriff Ed Frady takes down the ones Danny puts up. Ryan and his friend Leo push Danny into the cemetery and tell him Walker Falls stopped celebrating the holiday because of Curtis Danko, a boy who died at the school twenty years earlier and left a warning that he would return if the town held another Halloween. At a town meeting, James announces a Halloween party to raise money, and the crowd runs out.
