Plot summary
Doris Robertson is a teenager in North Philadelphia, grieving her grandfather and keeping to herself while her foster sister Lauri tries to draw her into a social life. When her parents leave for a two-day trip and she cries in front of the television, a tear lands on the remote and opens a portal. Fat Albert climbs out, followed by Rudy, Mushmouth, Dumb Donald, Bucky and Old Weird Harold. Unable to return until the next day's broadcast, the gang follows Doris to school and decides to help her make friends. Albert is drawn to Lauri, and Reggie, a schoolmate with a crush on her, challenges him to a track race.

- When the project was revived in 2001, Omar Benson Miller was cast as Fat Albert with Forest Whitaker directing, but reported clashes between Miller, Whitaker and Bill Cosby led to Whitaker being replaced by Joel Zwick.
- A live-action Fat Albert film first went into pre-production in 1993, with Tracy Morgan slotted to play the title character, but it soon entered development hell because no studio was interested in the project.
- Open casting calls were held in New York City and Los Angeles in the hope of finding an unknown child actor to play the title character; the search proved futile and the role was eventually offered to Kenan Thompson.
- Director David Gordon Green was interested in making the film and claimed that he lobbied for the director's chair by writing a letter to Bill Cosby.
